Research Notes
Drafted under the Military Service Act, 1917 (Class One), MSA letter/number 20817 DC. The casualty form has a report date of 7 December 1918 but records “Absentee” at the Engineer Training Depot, St. Johns, Quebec, and “S.O.S. Deserter” effective 29 June 1918. The Last Pay Certificate independently states that he was struck off strength on 29 June 1918 and gives the cause of discharge as Deserter, authority D.O. 361. Accordingly, 29 June 1918 is used as the effective discharge/S.O.S. date; 7 December is retained only as the later administrative report date. No overseas service is documented in this 14-page file. Final QA: the page 5 index card was rechecked; “Canada, Valleyfield” is treated as birthplace information, not as a documented place of discharge.
