Research Notes
DOB: 9 Oct 1896 is explicitly recorded on the Particulars of Recruit and repeated on the index card. The stated ages of 22y10m in Aug 1918 and 23y1m in Nov 1918 would imply Oct 1895; this arithmetic conflict is preserved, but the repeated explicit DOB is used as the structured value. Recruitment occurred in stages: the index card and Last Pay Certificates state attested/enlisted at Montreal on 3 May 1918; the recruit form was dated 5 May; he was medically examined/called up and joined the 2nd Depot Battalion on 23 Aug 1918, which the casualty form and discharge certificate also use as the service-reckons/enlisted date. The structured p_enlistmentDate is 3 May 1918, with 23 Aug preserved as call-up/joining. Page 13 records AWL from 5 Sep to 17 Oct 1918. The $47.30 charge corresponds to 43 days at $1.10/day, and an additional punishment of seven days' pay is entered as $7.70. This disciplinary episode did not determine his discharge, which remained normal demobilization. The initial date of transfer to O/S Company COTC Laval is not stated; he is proven with that unit by the account beginning 5 Sep, and transfer back to 2nd Depot Battalion is explicit on 23 Oct.
