Research Notes

Third-pass review resolves the return-to-Canada sequence: the 69th Battalion pay card records the unit sailing 17 Apr 1916; a theatre card records France service from 17 Jul 1916; Lute sailed for Canada aboard H.M.T. Carmania on 21 Dec 1918 and arrived Halifax 29 Dec 1918. The 20 Jan 1919 S.O.S. entry is administrative, not the physical return date. Formal discharge records give 24 Jan 1919, while a later administrative record gives effective 25 Jan 1919; 24 Jan is retained as p_dateOfDischarge and 25 Jan is preserved in chronology. The 1916-17 reserve-unit sequence remains partly illegible. Initial NOK was brother Richard Lute of St. Regis, Quebec; later assigned-pay records name Jacques Lute, father, Montreal. Discharge examination recorded 148 lb and 5 ft 6 in, compared with 141 lb and 5 ft 5 in at enlistment.
