His parents were Hector Savage, a carpenter, and Lina Savage. He made a will on 8 October 1942 leaving his entire estate to his mother Lina. Disciplinary records show 14 days detention for AWL on 24 March 1943; a civilian conviction at Barrie on 24 March 1943 for an offence committed 22 March, reduced to joy riding, with a suspended sentence and remand to military custody; and two field offences on 4 September 1943—AWL from place of duty and conduct prejudicial to good order and military discipline involving unauthorized use of a War Department vehicle—resulting in concurrent 28-day punishments. His mother's later correspondence states that three of her sons were in the Canadian Army, two overseas; in May 1945 she said one son had been overseas for about 3½ years and another since the previous December.
