Notes

Born 30 April 1920 at Valleyfield, Quebec. Before active enlistment he was a motion-picture operator/projectionist and assistant operator at the Royal Theatre, Valleyfield; occupational histories also name cinema proprietor G. Martineau. He hoped to become a cameraman after the war. Early records report seven years of public school and leaving school at sixteen, while later militia records report Grade 8 or Grade 9 and three years of English night school. The 1971 application names Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix, Verdun, with an address at Orphelinat St-Arsène, Montreal. French was his mother tongue; he spoke English and French and later reported reading/writing and instructional ability in both. He enjoyed sport. At active enlistment he was 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighed 135 pounds and had a 33-inch fully expanded chest with two-inch expansion, blue eyes, fair hair and a vaccination scar on the left arm. The earlier NRMA form gives 5 feet 4½ inches, brown hair and a left-thumb mark. Later height/weight records vary and also identify neck and right-thigh/hip scars.

After demobilization he sought projectionist reinstatement and vocational training, with cameraman training as an alternative. The counsellor favoured film projection to suit his experience; he was referred to the National Employment Service in Valleyfield and DVA training counselling in Montreal. He intended to apply his credit against his home mortgage. The December 1945 medical advice was to avoid excessive cold, dampness, dust and irritant inhalants because of sinus and tonsil troubles. His discharge address was 114 Second Avenue, Village Billette, Valleyfield; in May 1946 he requested cheques at 2 Du Marché Street, apartment 12. His 1949 medal request used 1575 Wellington Street, Montreal. War-service gratuity totalled $950.27 less $29.39 overpayment, leaving $920.88 in six monthly instalments.

Later he worked as an electrician for Hervé St-Onge at Valleyfield, with employment history giving May 1956–September 1959. He was unemployed after his hip accident and reported nearly a year out of work by November 1960. His last civilian wage was reported as $60 a week. Subsequent military work included bar steward in the sergeants' mess, administrative/orderly-room clerk, ledger clerk and quartermaster storeman. Summer assessments praised reliability, initiative and efficient management of stationery and P&S stores. His call-out applications repeatedly state that he could not drive and would accept general duties or a lower paid rank. By January 1971 he worked for the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires at the DVA hospital, Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue.

Existing CWVMP notes report death on 5 January 1978 at Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec. This death information is retained as existing project evidence.

Additional Service Notes

Called up under the NRMA in May 1941, D620308, and trained at No. 45 Basic Training Centre, Sorel. Entered voluntary active General Service as Private on 8 July 1941 at No. 4 District Depot, Montreal South, D109779. Transferred to Fusiliers Mont-Royal and No. 47 Basic Training Centre, Valleyfield, then A12 at Farnham; attached to Canadian Signal Training Centre, Barriefield/Kingston, March–June 1942. Transferred at own request to Régiment de la Chaudière, proceeded on overseas draft Serial 743 and embarked 14 June 1942. Overseas strength began administratively 15 June; actual UK disembarkation is read variously 23–25 June. Served in divisional infantry reinforcement units, trained unsuccessfully with No. 1 Canadian Signals Reinforcement Unit July–October 1942, then 3 CDIRU and 6 CIRU, with an Army Defence Company attachment before returning to Régiment de la Chaudière in March 1943. Worked as rifleman, cipher clerk at regimental headquarters and later projectionist.

Embarked for France 1 June 1944 and landed on D-Day, 6 June, with Régiment de la Chaudière. After a mortar blast buried him in a slit trench about 5 July he was evacuated with battle exhaustion/anxiety. The field card classifies him as a battle casualty; no physical combat wound is established. After field treatment and reinforcement holding he was employed successfully as a projectionist in 20 Special Employment Company. Psychiatric review 8 November and medical categorization assessment 22 November 1944 recorded chronic psychoneurosis, anxiety state, and recommended M2 S4 for base duties. He described shaking at noise and disrupted sleep. Subsequently served with 1 Canadian Army Leave Centre, including Nijmegen, Groningen and Amsterdam entries. Served in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Took eleven days leave to Britain in June 1945, returned 3 July, left North-West Europe 21 September and landed Britain 22 September. Overseas service ended 20 October 1945; taken on strength at Montreal South 21 October, with a separate repatriation entry dated 28 October. Granted leave 29 October–6 December and discharged as Private on 11 December 1945 for demobilization. He received War Service Badge, General Service class, 584627. Campaign awards comprise 1939–45 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, CVSM and clasp, and War Medal as corroborated by the later militia card.

Postwar militia service is separately documented under D823857: enrolled 1 December 1958 as Private in D Company, 4th Battalion Royal 22e Régiment (Châteauguay), Royal Canadian Infantry Corps. Appointed paid Lance Corporal 1 September 1960. Repeated summer special-duty employment through No. 4 Personnel Depot/CFB Montreal at Camp Farnham occurred in 1961–1967; winter Special Militia Training Programme duty in 1961–1962 and Valcartier special duty in 1968 are also recorded. Paid ranks varied between Private, Lance Corporal and Corporal on these engagements and must not be treated as a single uninterrupted substantive promotion. Passed Trained Militiaman/SMTP course December 1961; Storeman Accounting Group 1 Block 1 in 1963 and Block 2/Class 2 in April 1964. Remustered Supply Technician in April 1968. Awarded Canadian Forces Decoration, entitlement approved November 1966 and award recorded 3 January 1967; first-clasp eligibility in 1975 was projected, not proof of an award. Released from militia 28 February 1970 on relinquishing Lance Corporal appointment. Appointed civilian instructor and quartermaster, No. 183 RCSCC St. Francis, Huntingdon, 11 January 1971; appointment ceased 1 January 1973, in absentia. Second-lieutenant references in this appointment denote pay basis, not commissioned rank.

Additional Next of Kin Notes

His father, Joseph Fabien Carriere, was deceased by 1941; later screening records describe him as born at Saint-Polycarpe, apparently 10 September 1869. His mother was Albina / Marie Albina Prévost (also written Provost and once Almina), of 102 Avenue de la Grande Ile, Bellerive, Valleyfield. Later screening records describe her as born at Rivière-Beaudette, apparently 22 December 1878, and deceased by the time of that record. In 1941 he was the sole support of his widowed mother, contributing $60 monthly; he declared no insurance and no other supported dependants.

Married with permission on 28 July 1941 at St. Agnes Church, Montreal, to Marie Marguerite Norma Patricia Noel, generally called Norma. The later screening form appears to read 27 July; the wartime permission/marriage entry supports 28 July. Her premarital address was 5382 St. Denis Street, Montreal; married addresses include 3423 Lasalle Boulevard, Verdun, and 106 Grand Isle Avenue, Valleyfield. Her parents were Henry Noel, born 10 June 1896, Montreal, and Catherine Noel, born 4 April 1899, Montreal; their later address was 9 Wilfrid, Chomedey. Norma was a homemaker; her birth day/month are redacted, and 1919 is only an apparent reading of the visible year.

One daughter is identified as Norma Lise / Norma Lisa, also Marie Lise in 1971, born 1942; exact day/month are redacted. She is treated as one daughter with variant names, not several children. Later militia family addresses include 33 St. Denis Street, 115 Cousineau, 118A Alexandre, 374-A Denis/Danis and 344-A Danis, Valleyfield; a 1963 sick report gives Norma at 277 Gordon, Verdun. Isolated heavily overtyped forms read eight dependants, but the consistent records identify wife and one daughter. Mother and wife were both recipients of assigned pay/dependants allowances. Supplement pp.22,24 record $20 assigned to mother from1 June1941, reduced to $6.50 from August; wife's assignment $20 from August. Supplement p.16 amends assignments to $7.50 and $23 from February1943 and lists dependants' allowances $15 mother/$35 wife. A cancelled $10 mother allowance appears separately; these changing entries are not assumed concurrent totals. His will executed 8 July 1941 was returned 28 December 1945; no beneficiary is reliably identified in the supplied evidence.
