Notes
Allan Herbert Arnold was born at St. Agnes de Dundee, Quebec, on 29 December 1918, son of farmer William James Arnold and Olive Isabella Simpson. He was baptized at Zion Church, Dundee, on 28 January 1920. He attended Dundee Consolidated School and left formal schooling in 1935. Wartime records describe Grade IX/two years of high school; later signed declarations give Grade X standing. He studied diesel, automobile and aircraft engines through Chicago Vocational Institute correspondence and a short practical course at Greer College, Chicago. He helped on his father’s farm and worked for Montreal contractor Cecil Carpenter, including operating a cement mixer, before enlistment. He spoke English fluently and some French.
He married Marion McQuiston, daughter of James McQuiston and Annie Barr, at Central United Church, Calgary, on 21 November 1941. Their daughters were Isabel Anne, born Calgary in 1943; Sharon Lee, born Calgary in 1946; and Gwen Darlene, born Ottawa in 1951. The exact days and months are redacted. His family lived at 1420 15th Street East, Calgary; later at Rockcliffe, 175 Berry Street in Norwood, Winnipeg, and PMQ 64 at Saskatoon. They moved to 394 Vancouver Avenue, Penticton, in January 1957.
His interests included softball, swimming, gliding, photography and woodworking. At Saskatoon he helped establish and operate the station photographic hobby shop. He worked for Great West Life Assurance Company in Calgary after his 1945 release, then operated a trucking business at St. Agnes de Dundee and in the Drumheller oil industry before rejoining the RCAF. In 1956 he invested approximately $11,000 in equipment for a Penticton construction and logging venture with Floyd Frank and two brothers. By December 1960 he was an air survey pilot with the British Columbia Civil Service, based at the Parliament Buildings, Victoria.
At his 1940 entry examination he was 68 inches tall, weighed 142 pounds, and had a 36-inch expired chest with 2½-inch expansion, dark hair, hazel eyes and dark complexion. Later records describe a scar on his chin and changing weight and hair colour. The existing CWVMP record gives his death as 4 February 1977 and burial in Calgary, Alberta.

Additional Service Notes
Enlisted at Montreal on 30 September 1940 as R73638 in the RCAF Special Reserve, initially General Duties, then Service Police (Guard)/Security Guard. After service at Brandon, Ottawa, Calgary, Caron and Claresholm, he remustered to aircrew and trained at Regina, Fort William and Dauphin. He received his Pilot’s Flying Badge and temporary sergeant rank on 26 November 1943. Posted to No. 5 Air Observer School, Winnipeg, he worked for the civilian operating company as a staff pilot during leave without RCAF pay from 1 February 1944 to 4 March 1945. He attained temporary flight sergeant on 26 May 1944 and Warrant Officer Class II on 26 February 1945. Wartime active service ended on 21 April 1945 with transfer to the Reserve; the file records Canadian service only.
Re-engaged in the Regular RCAF on 20 November 1948 as 13979 in the photographer trade. He completed photography training at Rockcliffe and served with No. 1 Photographic Establishment before receiving a five-year short-service commission as Pilot Officer, with simultaneous promotion to Flying Officer, on 20 October 1951. After refresher training at Calgary he served as a staff pilot and, for a period, adjutant at No. 2 Air Navigation School, Winnipeg. He completed survival and instructor training, served at No. 1 Advanced Flying School, Saskatoon, and transferred to No. 406 Squadron’s Regular Support Staff on 13 September 1955. His aircraft experience included Tiger Moth, Cessna Crane, Anson, Harvard, Beechcraft, C-45 and Mitchell types. By October 1956 the record gave 3,059 piston-aircraft flying hours, including 2,634 as first pilot, and no jet time.
A reprimand followed absence without leave and failure to attend parade on 7 September 1942. His later Regular service statement recorded no AWOL, desertion, custody, detention or imprisonment. Medical history included appendectomy in May 1941, tonsillectomy with postoperative haemorrhage and anaemia in July–August 1942, an improving early anxiety state at wartime release, poison ivy dermatitis in 1949, influenza in 1951, and a right-maxillary dental abscess in 1952. Duodenal ulcer was confirmed at Trenton in May 1954. Clinical assessments recommended multi-engined flying without aerobatics, and he received further ulcer treatment at Saskatoon in 1955 and Shaughnessy Hospital in January–February 1957. His 1957 release board specifically recommended release on administrative grounds.
A one-year commission extension was accepted in 1955, but a later review declined a permanent commission or further extension. He sought early release for his civilian business, supported by his squadron after an initial refusal. Honourably released on 22 February 1957 and transferred to the Supplementary Reserve, he remained a Flying Officer until release from that reserve on 15 December 1960. The following day he was appointed Second Lieutenant and Lieutenant in Cadet Services of Canada, number TK97694, with 2483 Esquimalt (Princess Patricia’s) Cadet Corps. He transferred to its Reserve List on 1 April 1962 and was released effective 1 April 1965.
Confirmed medals were the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal without clasp and War Medal 1939–45. His Canadian Forces’ Decoration applications in 1956 and 1961 were declined for insufficient qualifying service. No award of that decoration is established.
