Notes
Joseph Réal Gérard Lalonde was born 10 April 1923 at St-Louis-de-Gonzague, Beauharnois County, Quebec, son of Omer (Joseph Omer) Lalonde and Armandine Daoust, of 17 St-Louis Street, Valleyfield. His father was a constable and later described as an inspector. Both parents were living during the war. An October 1942 form records two living brothers, six living sisters and one brother who died in infancy. On 14 May 1942 he declared that his registered third given name Girard should be changed to Gerard; he usually signed Gérard Lalonde.
He completed Grade 10, junior matriculation and a commercial course at Séminaire/Collège de Valleyfield in 1940. A later account separates primary study at Jardin de l’Enfance, 1930–1935, and Seminary study, 1935–1940. He worked from August 1940 to November 1942 as a bookkeeper/assistant accountant and cashier for A. H. Besner’s hardware/department store, 18–20 Nicholson Street, Valleyfield. French was fluent and English initially fair; later he reported speaking and writing both fluently. He enjoyed reading, softball/baseball, swimming, hockey, skating, bowling, pool, fishing, hunting and cycling, with curling on one service card. Entrance assessors described him as quiet, polite, cooperative, intelligent, precise and athletic. Later release counselling described him as neatly presented, apparently intelligent, bilingual and a good talker. He reported neither smoking nor drinking in 1942. He belonged to the Zouaves Pontificaux Canadiens and initially hoped for an RCMP career; at release he wanted to become an accountant and study Commerce at the University of Montreal. The file establishes plans, not university attendance or a degree.
He was single, Roman Catholic, had no children/dependants and no prior military service at RCAF enlistment. His October 1942 medical-history description gives 5 feet 8½ inches, 140 pounds, chest 34–37 inches, medium complexion, brown eyes and hair, forehead/right-knee scars, moles and a cyst behind the thigh near the knee. The fuller entrance examination gives 146 pounds. Later descriptions vary: release examination 69 inches/163 pounds; certificate and identity card 5 feet 10 inches; Army enrolment card about 5 feet 9½ inches/155 pounds, but contemporary Army examination 5 feet 10 inches/175 pounds and chest 35–38 inches.
Rita Robineault, identified as his girlfriend, was an additional casualty contact at 147A Salaberry Street, Valleyfield; another statement gives Jacques-Cartier. Army forms by 1949 name his wife Jeanne Lalonde; existing CWVMP identifies Jeanne Pilon (1928–1988). In February 1951 he reported wife and one child, unnamed. His home changed from 17 to 19 St-Louis in May 1949; 64 St-Charles occurs in Army papers, and 51 rue Lanctot is documented from 1958 to final release. He was employed in the Unemployment Insurance Commission/National Employment Service at 63A Champlain Street: Veterans’ Officer by 1949, senior clerk by 1951 and employment branch supervisor by 1958. Existing CWVMP records his death on 19 June 1979 and burial in Valleyfield Catholic Cemetery Field of Honour. Request confirmation EA2026_0172228.

Additional Service Notes
Voluntarily enlisted at Montreal on 25 November 1942 in the RCAF Special Reserve as Aircraftman 2nd Class R207167. Unpaid pre-training leave lasted 26 November 1942–21 February 1943. Basic training at No. 5 Manning Depot, Lachine, was followed by English study at No. 1 Manning Depot, Toronto, refresher/pre-aircrew education at H. B. Beal School, London, and administrative postings to Technical Training School, St. Thomas, No. 14 SFTS, Aylmer, and No. 1 Air Gunner Ground Training School, Quebec. Promoted Leading Aircraftman 12 November 1943; Air Gunner Course 67 at No. 3 Bombing and Gunnery School, Macdonald, ended 23 December 1943 with Air Gunner wings and Temporary Sergeant rank. Training report described him as above average, neat, accurate and reliable; 21 hours 40 minutes flying on Battle aircraft. The school did not consider him suitable for further gunnery-instructor training, while the later squadron repatriation assessment recommended air-instructor employment. After No. 1 Y Depot and No. 4 Air Gunner Training School at Valleyfield, he embarked Halifax 5 March 1944 and reached Liverpool 14 March.
Overseas training proceeded through No. 3 PRC, No. 22 OTU at Stratford on Wellington III/X aircraft, No. 61 Base and No. 1664 Heavy Conversion Unit. OTU Course 70 ran 6 June–23 August 1944; a severe crash delayed training, but his keenness and determination were praised. No crash date, aircraft loss or specific injury is established. Mid-upper gunnery conversion assessment 30 October gave 82.5% and described a very good, keen gunner. Promoted Temporary Flight Sergeant 23 September 1944, Temporary Warrant Officer Class II 23 March 1945, and commissioned Pilot Officer 15 April 1945 as J94782. With No. 425 (RCAF) Squadron from 31 October/1 November 1944, he completed one No. 6 Group Bomber Command operational tour of 31 sorties over Europe on Halifax III aircraft, 16 November 1944–8 April 1945. Operational badge documentation gives 200 hours and repatriation/application records 200 hours 25 minutes. Overseas flying total 410 hours 25 minutes comprised Wellington 110 hours 50 minutes and Halifax II/V/III 299 hours 35 minutes; with Canadian training, total flying was 432 hours 5 minutes. His aircrew trade was Air Gunner, not pilot despite a printed aircraft-experience field heading.
Coryza required four days in Tholthorpe station sick quarters, 1–5 December 1944, after which he returned to duty. He was repatriated as surplus to requirements through R Depot, Warrington, in May–July 1945; administrative Canadian strength date 9 July conflicts with recorded sailing dates. Posted through No. 1 Repatriation Depot, Lachine, No. 1 Air Command, Trenton, No. 13 EFTS, St. Johns, and No. 2 Release Centre, Lachine. Release clinical assessments found him fit for any employment, without a disabling condition. Honourably released 25 September 1945 on completion of voluntary wartime service under K.R. (Air) 151(1)(i), transferring to Reserve Class E. No charges, adverse reports or course failures are recorded in the wartime selection summary; Veterans’ Land Act service verification records no forfeitures. War-service gratuity was $505.12 on corrected qualifying totals of 948 days and 492 overseas days. General Service Badge 184378 was replaced by 712485 in August 1946. Operational Badge certified April 1945. Confirmed medals: 1939–45 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939–45, and CVSM with clasp, received 21 October 1949. Aircrew Europe Star/clasp claim denied 8 March 1950 because no operations fell within its qualifying period.
He sought further RCAF employment, especially the Bureau of Missing Personnel because friends had gone missing on operations. Transition-period officer application was declined 26 June 1946 for lack of vacancies; February 1951 re-entry inquiry failed because no Gunnery Officer establishment existed. RCAF Class E resignation effective 17 January 1950 allowed Army Reserve appointment. Lieutenant TD4966 in 61 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, RCA, 182 LAA Battery, was approved 19 June 1950 with retrospective effect 10 November 1949; special consideration overcame rank-equivalence objections. Promoted Captain 10 November 1952 following qualification and three years as Lieutenant. Troop-commander recommendation is supported; a competing Quartermaster proposal and officer-slate discrepancy were not conclusively resolved. Passed Captain-to-Major practical examination May 1953 but failed oral examination August 1953; no Major promotion. Strength transfer to 182 LAA Battery effective 1 December 1954, return to 61 LAA Regiment 2 January 1956. Completed annual training each year 1950–1958, including Point Petre/Picton camps. Became supernumerary after 182 Battery was reduced to nil in June 1958 and transferred to Supplementary Reserve 24 November 1958. Canadian Forces’ Decoration claim denied 12 March 1963 for only 11 years 7 months 21 days qualifying service; no CD awarded. Finally released 12 November 1969 and placed on Retired List as Captain.
