Completed Grade 7 at an intermediate school in Hemmingford in 1937 and left school at age 16; no high school, college or university education was recorded. Spoke English and French fluently and reported reading both well. Civilian work in 1936–1940 included waiting, garage work, farm work, construction and labouring for various employers in Hemmingford. A discharge summary specifies six months as a waiter in a country hotel dining room/dance hall, two months as a road-construction labourer and six months as a transport-truck helper; he was working on the home farm immediately before enlistment. Attestation occupation was truck driver. Qualification record gives a civilian weekly wage of $12.00 and right-handedness. Sports included swimming, tennis, hockey and softball. Qualification interview described him as neat, correct, robust and athletic, cooperative, and a good driver with limited map-reading ability. Entry weight was 154 pounds; height appears to be 6 feet ¼ inch, compared with 5 feet 11 inches at release and 6 feet 1 inch in a qualification record. Entry chest was 36 inches expanded with a 3-inch range; release weight 160 pounds. Fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair; scar on back of left hand and vaccination mark on left arm. A left-arm fracture in 1930 required treatment at Windsor, and a qualification record lists pneumonia in 1932. In 1943 he favoured farming after the war, but by discharge no longer intended to farm and wanted police work at Windsor, where his father lived. Alternatives recommended were truck driving or training for semi-skilled industrial work. Post-discharge mailing address was Box 323, Hemmingford, Quebec; later dental address was care of Mrs. Cruickshank, 214 Chateauguay Street, Huntingdon, Quebec. Existing biographical information records death at Hemmingford on 8 January 1988.
