Service Biography
Leading Aircraftman Ross Edward McLean was born at Huntingdon on 8 April 1919, son of Edward (Ward) McLean and Grace Elizabeth Rankin. Educated at Huntingdon Academy, he worked on the family farm and as a grocery clerk before joining the Royal Canadian Air Force at Montreal on 25 July 1941. He trained as an aero-engine mechanic and served in Canada, mainly at Scoudouc, New Brunswick, attaining Leading Aircraftman and the highest wartime trade grouping. Farm leave enabled him to help his parents on their Godmanchester dairy farm. He married Pearl Inez Lewis at Moncton on 3 June 1943. Released on 25 October 1945, he received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and War Medal. He rejoined the Regular RCAF in 1948 and served in Canada and France, becoming a Sergeant and power-plant supervisor. His later career ended at compulsory retirement in October 1969. Following divorce in January 1952, he married Marjorie Elizabeth Gifford that August; daughter Mary Eileen was born in 1954. McLean died at Cambridge on 3 December 1992; his funeral was held at Rockton United Church on 5 December, followed by cremation.

Notes
Ross Edward McLean was born at Huntingdon on 8 April 1919, confirmed by the Huntingdon United Church register, and baptized there on 8 August 1919. Parents Edward (also called Ward) McLean and Grace Elizabeth Rankin operated a 100-acre dairy farm in Godmanchester. Attended Huntingdon Academy in 1927–1938; completed Grade 10 and some Grade 11 credits. Farmed for his father in 1938–1940 and worked as a grocery-store clerk for James McCoy in Huntingdon before joining the RCAF. Spoke English fluently and some French. Enjoyed baseball, rugby, hockey, tennis and swimming; later took part in Sunday School, community projects, Toastmasters and mess activities. RCAF entry measurements were six feet, 172½ pounds, chest 33¾ inches fully inspired with 3½-inch expansion, fair complexion, brown eyes and black hair, with a scar on the right foot/ankle. Later measurements varied; retirement description gave six feet, 185 pounds, medium complexion and dark gray hair. Married Pearl Inez Lewis at St. George’s Church, Moncton, on 3 June 1943; separated by about January 1944 and obtained final divorce on 4 January 1952. Married Marjorie Elizabeth Gifford at Ferris, Ontario, on 23 August 1952. Daughter Mary Eileen was born at North Bay in 1954; exact birth date is redacted. Four sisters and brother Howard are named in later family history. After WW2 he considered dairy farming under the Veterans’ Land Act and electrical vocational training, and worked at several civilian jobs, including Henry Morgan department-store clerk in Montreal early in 1948. Rejoined the Regular RCAF in 1948 and eventually served as a Sergeant and power-plant supervisor, retiring in 1969. His daughter’s schooling influenced his requested retirement extension. Lived at Rockton, Ontario, after retirement. Died at Hilltop Manor, Cambridge, on 3 December 1992. Funeral was held at Rockton United Church on 5 December, with Rev. Kim Wright; cremation is certified by J. B. Marlatt Funeral Homes. Existing CWVMP information identifies Blue Church Cemetery, Prescott, Ontario; the funeral statement does not establish the eventual ashes interment. Marjorie died on 14 August 1993; her daughter Merri/Mary Corrigal was executrix.

Enlisted in the RCAF Special Reserve at Montreal on 25 July 1941, R120281, following Victoria Rifles/NRMA service. Trained at No. 4A Manning Depot, St. Hubert, No. 2 Air Navigation School, Pennfield Ridge, and Technical Training School, St. Thomas. Advanced from Aircraftman 2nd Class to Aircraftman 1st Class on 7 February 1942 and Leading Aircraftman on 1 October 1942. Served as an aero-engine mechanic at No. 4 Repair Depot and RCAF Station Scoudouc, New Brunswick, with temporary duty at Sydney in April–May 1942. Passed AEM Group A with 80% on 1 January 1943. Took Canadian Legion pre-aircrew mathematics/science studies and sought aircrew remuster, but was not accepted on medical eligibility grounds; no wings or operational aircrew service is established. Served in Canada only during WW2. Repeated unpaid farm leave helped his elderly and ill parents on their Godmanchester farm. Qualifying-service calculation deducted 165 days, including farm leave and three days AWOL, leaving 1,389 qualifying days. Release assessment noted mild anxiety related to domestic difficulties but found him fit for employment. Honourably released as Leading Aircraftman at No. 2 Release Centre, Lachine, on 25 October 1945, K.R. (Air) 195(17), completion of emergency voluntary service; transferred to Reserve Class E. Wartime awards: Canadian Volunteer Service Medal without overseas clasp and War Medal. General Service War Service Badge 693137 received in November 1945. Separate later Regular RCAF career began 12 March 1948, number 27840; promoted Corporal 1 October 1952 and Sergeant 1 June 1964. Served with fighter squadrons, at Grostenquin in 1952–1953, Canadian stations including North Bay, Beaverbank, Resolute Bay, Parent and Uplands, and Support Unit Metz in 1963–1967 before 11 Radar Squadron, Lac St. Denis. Remustered from aero-engine work to power-plant operation because of colour-vision limitations, and later served as MS Technician 625. Received Canadian Forces Decoration in 1960 and first clasp in 1967. Released from that distinct postwar career on 11 October 1969 at compulsory release age, QR&O 15.01 item 5(a), with a lifetime annuity.
Additional Next of Kin Notes
Original RCAF next of kin was father Edward McLean, farmer, Huntingdon, also named Ward in farm correspondence. Mother Grace Elizabeth Rankin lived at Huntingdon. On marriage 3 June 1943 wife Pearl Inez Lewis became casualty contact at Moncton, with address apparently 21 McAllen/McAllan Lane; exact street spelling differs in copies. They separated about January 1944 but remained legally married through WW2. Divorce finalized 4 January 1952. Second wife Marjorie Elizabeth Gifford married 23 August 1952, Ferris, Ontario; daughter Mary Eileen born North Bay in 1954. Later NOK addresses include North Bay trailer camp, Metz, PMQ 22 at Lac St. Denis, and 8 McDonald Street, Rockton. Brother Howard/H. R. McLean is recorded as additional NOK at R.R. 4, Huntingdon. Some copied records misidentify the brother/father/mother relationship. Marjorie’s mother L. G. Gifford was approved as a dependant in 1964; father F. D. Gifford’s illness prompted compassionate transfer requests in 1959. Widow Marjorie died 14 August 1993; daughter Merri/Mary Corrigal, also Corrigall, handled her estate.
