Research Notes

Final QA complete. Theodule Lemieux, Private 3167475, was born 22 November 1897 at Saint-Antoine-Abbé, Quebec. He was a single Roman Catholic farmer living at Saint-Chrysostome, Quebec; his mother Georgiana Gervais was next of kin. The recruit form records Active Militia No and no previous military/naval service. He was drafted under the Military Service Act. The recruit form and index card independently support 17 July 1918 at Montreal as his attestation date. The later 23 August 1918 date has a distinct documentary meaning: the Casualty Form—Active Service states enlisted 23-8-18 and service reckons from 23-8-18, while the Medical History Sheet records joined 23 August 1918 at Montreal. The workbook therefore preserves 17 July as enlistment/attestation and 23 August as the reporting/joining date from which active service reckoned. His medical examination on 23 August recorded age 21 years 8 months, height 5 ft 3 in, weight 113 lb, chest 32-36 in, medium complexion, brown eyes, black hair, poor physical development and Category A2; 'Warts left hand' was noted as a slight defect. He served in Canada with the 2nd Depot Battalion, 2nd Quebec Regiment. Demobilization evidence converges on 1 February 1919: the index card records SOS on that date, the casualty form carries the 1-2-1919 SOS authority, and the demobilization receipt was completed at Montreal on 1 February. The notice was dated 26 January and his renunciation was signed 30 January. Farmer's Leave is retained as the source demobilization procedure/reason. No overseas service, hospital admission, POW event, promotion, combat event, disciplinary event, or explicit medal award is supported by the surviving 18-page file.
