The recruit form identifies him as a Military Service Act 'Defaulter'. The service-file jacket is marked DESERTERS / 'Illegally Absent'. The casualty form explicitly records 'S.O.S. as Deserter 3/5/18 D.O. 206', resolving the effective date as 3 May 1918. Page 7 also records T.O.S. 5 Apr 1918 under D.O. 99; this is retained as a separate administrative unit-strength event after his 4 Apr enlistment/joining date.
