Military Grants
Letters from Lt. Col. McKee and Capt. McKay asked that the Council make a grant for a machine gun and supply a field kitchen for the use of the soldiers. The former gentleman mentioned the fact that many of the north country towns had already supplied field guns at a cost of some $1000 each, North Bay supplying no less than three of these deadly little weapons. Capt. McKay was specially interested in the field kitchen for the members of the 58th regiment, of which he is Captain. The members of the council were very sympathetic with requests of both gentlemen, and the matter will be gone into more fully before any definite steps are taken. Capt. McKay pointed out that it would require two days' pay from each soldier to supply the kitchen outfit, and that there were numerous other levies on the soldiers which made the kitchen levy considerable of a burden. We believe our citizens would support any reasonable grant the Council saw fit to make in support of either or both requests.
