Seized Fifteen Bottles Of Whiskey At Cross Wall Yesterday Noon
Dated: February 12, 1919
The effort of the Quebec Harbor Commission Police to prevent the supplying of liquor to soldiers quartered at the Clearing Depot which is alleged to have been going on for some time and of which strong proofs have already been secured, were rewarded somewhat yesterday noon at the cross wall at the Basin when a sergt.-major and a lieutenant were held up by the police and fifteen bottles of whiskey taken from them.
Fourteen bottles were found on the person of the sergt.-major and one on that of the lieutenant. The stuff was confiscated and the affair reported to the military authorities. The lieutenant is said by the police to be a returned man and the sergt.-major to be a conductor of troops. It is stated also by police that the latter when questioned, said that he obtained a permit from one of the medical officers at the depot to purchase the liquor.
